350 Engine Build

The objective of this project is to build a Chevy small block 350 engine.  Ian and Jeff have a common goal of doing this in their lifetime.  This a learning experience for both of us.  The current plan is this engine would replace the 305 engine in Jeff's 55 Chevy.  The horsepower and torque objectives for the engine are low - 275-300hp and 325-350 ft. lbs of torque.

Here is a bunch of links on different topics related to building an engine.

I am keeping track of all the item that have been or need to be purchased via this spreadsheet.  I call this my "scorecard".   Please don't tell my wife about this link. :)

Chronology...

1/7/2003 Initial purchase of a 350 small block Chevy (SBC) 4-bolt main raw block from a local guy for $50.
1/20/2003 Delivered block to a local engine shop for cleaning and crack testing (magnafluxing).  The local machine shop is Auto Machine and Parts, Co (AMP).  We should know more about the block in approx. 5 days.  Cleaning is $66 and magnafluxing is $30.
1/25/2003 Purchase set of used heads from Nate for $75.  These are casting#333882 heads.  These are stock heads used from 74-80 and have 76cc chambers.  The heads were recently rebuilt and have approx. 20k miles on them.
1/31/2003 Pickup block from AMP.  Block is usable - it is not cracked.  The main caps and saddles will need to be aligned honed ($130) or aligned bored ($190) and then the cylinders bored 30 over ($120).  Before align honing or boring, the correct procedures are to use the actual bolts or studs that will be installed.  Same thing for boring the cylinders, you need to have the pistons before that can be done.
